More than 10,000 kids in Virginia become daily smokers each year
and one third will die of smoking related disease.
It’s time to put a stop to this!
Virginia spends only $13 million on youth tobacco use prevention programs even though the Centers for Disease Control recommends that Virginia spend $39 million annually on these programs. You can help change this! The Commonwealth of Virginia will receive approximately $8 million in new funds from tobacco companies this year. Tell your state legislators that you want these tobacco funds to be spent on youth tobacco use prevention programs. Ask that they support Budget Amendment Item 470-1S/470-1H.

To learn more about the youth tobacco use prevention programs that are going on in your area, please visit the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation’s website at www.vtsf.org. Additional funds would help the Foundation to expand its prevention programs to underserved areas in Virginia. The funds would also provide financial resources for a “quit-line” geared towards youth who are trying to stop smoking. Currently smokers who are under the age of 18 have a very difficult time accessing cessation services such as this.
